入場して左手に見える壁沿いに『機動戦士ガンダム』の原作者である富野由悠季さんからのメッセージが日本語と英語で展示されている。

日本語：富野由悠季さんからのメッセージ 見に来てくださってありがとう ごめんなさいと言わせてください 今日、実物大のガンダムを見に来てくださって、「あれ、歩かないのか、つまんないな」と思った君には、心からごめんなさい、とあやまります。 本当は、この大きさで歩くガンダムを造りたかったのですが、おじさんたちができることは、ここで見られる以上には動かせなかったのです。 本当にごめんなさい。 数年前に頭だけ動くガンダムを造ってみて、もっと動かせるだろうとおもったおじさんやおばさんたちがいっぱい、いました。 それでビルなどを作るときに使われる建設用の機械を作っている人たちや、二本足歩行のロボットを作っている人たちとも相談しました。どこまで動かせるのか、と考えたのです。 そして、分かったことがあります。歩かせようとすると足の裏を地面から浮かせなければならないのですが、ガンダムの大きさでは歩かせることが出来ないということだったのです。 歩くロボットが作れるようになったのに、なんでできないの？と不思議に思ったでしょうが、人の大きさならできるのですが、ガンダムの大きさでは、片方の足が地面から浮いている時間が長すぎるので、倒れてしまうのです。 そして、実際のガンダムができる”動かし方”を研究した結果が、ここで皆さん方が見ることができる”動き”なのです。 こんな動きしか、させられない、というのには、理由があります。 物が地面に落ちるのは、地球に重力というものがあって、それに引っ張られているからです。 これを防ぐ方法はありません。 逆に考えれば、テーブルの上にコップを置いておけるのは、重力があるからです。 スカイツリーのような高い塔は、倒れないだけの強い鉄骨の材料を組み合わせて、強風にも地震にも負けないように頑丈に作られています。そのために、絶対に動かすことができません。 大型のトレーラーは動きますが、車輪を使って地面から浮かないようにして、さらに、タイヤを使うことで、振動が車体に伝わらないようにして、荷台に乗っている荷物がゆれないように工夫されています。 ガンダムは人の形をしていますから、動くのなら”歩く”ということになりますが、足の裏が地面から浮いてしまう時間が長いのが欠点になって、動かすことができないのです。 もちろん、足の裏に地面との距離を測るセンサーや、全体のバランスを知らせるジャイロスコープといった機械を取り付けて、それらのデーターをコンピューターに集めて、体の向きや傾きを修正させるように各部のモーターを動かしてバランスを取ることができるのですが、ガンダムの大きさでは、とてもとても難しいのです。 もっと軽い材料やもっと優れた機械があれば、とも考えましたが、現在、建造できる動くものは、ここまでのものしか出来なかったのです。 なによりも、ガンダムの高さの大きさのものを”乗り物”と認めてくれる法律がなくて、”建造物の法律”にしたがって造る必要があったので、絶対に倒れてはならないものを造る必要があったのです。 ですから、整備塔のようなものの一部としてのガンダム、にしなければならなかったのです。 二本足で歩かせることができなかったので、悔しいと思っています。ですから、君たちにお願いしたいことがあります。 もっと乗り物として動かしたいと思う人は、このガンダムを見上げて、解決しなければならない問題がいっぱいあるのだ、という想像をして、その解決策を考え出してほしいのです。 でも、今回、ここまでしか動けないガンダムですが、建設に関係したスタッフはみんなで、造って良かったと思っています。 なぜなら、これだけの大きさの人の形が、ゆっくりとしか動けないのですが、そのゆっくりさがとても似合っていて、やさしいなぁ、と感じているのです。 本当は、アニメのように早く動くとか、スポーツ選手のように格好良く動いて欲しかったのですが、それだけではない”優しいガンダム”を見上げられることができて、ちょっと幸せな気持ちになっています。 これは、造ってみるまでは、誰も想像できなかったことなのですが、それはそれで、楽しいことだと思っていますので、楽しんで下さいとお願いします。 本当に、今日は、見に来てくださって、ありがとうございます。 機動戦士ガンダム・原作者 富野由悠季 でした。 2020年12月19日

英語：Message from Yoshiyuki Tomino, The original creator of Mobile Suit GUNDAM Thank you for coming to see the GUNDAM. However, allow me to apologize. I would like to apologize to you from the very bottom of my heart. You, who came all the way out here to see a life-sized Mobile Suit GUNDAM, only to think yourself, "What? It doesn't walk. How boring." Honestly, we wanted to make a GUNDAM this size walk, but the extent of the movements you see here today is all we old men were able to accomplish. Again, I am truly sorry. A few years ago, a GUNDAM was made that only had a moving head. There were many older men and women who thought it would be good if it moved more. So, I talked with peoplee who make the construction machinery used when buildings are erected, and with people who make bipedal robots. I then started thinking to what extent we could make the GUNDAM move. However, I came to understand something. To make the GUNDAM walk, we would need to ensure that it could lift the soles of its feet off the ground. For a GUNDAM of this size, that would be impossible. You might be wondering, "Hey, you're finally involved in a project to make a walking robot; why can't you do it?" Well, it is possible to make a human-sized robot walk. However, for a robot the size of the GUNDAM, it would have to lift one of its legs off the ground for a relatively long time, resulting in it toppling over. So, the results of all the research the team conducted in making a full-scale GUNDAM move are represented by the "movements" you see it make here today. There are reasons why it only moves as it does. Things fall to the ground because the Earth has gravity, which pulls things toward it. There is no way to counteract this force. Conversely, you can place a cup on a table because of gravity. Tall towers such as Tokyo Skytree are made of steel materials strong enough to prevent them from toppling over. They are built sturdily enough to withstand strong winds and earthquakes. The foot such a tower has a very strong foundation that is buried in the ground. Thus, it can never be moved. A large trailer can be moved. However, wheels are used to keep contact with the surface of the ground. Furthermore, tires are wrapped around the wheels to prevent vibrations from being transmitted to the vehicle body and shaking the load that has been placed on the trailer. Since the GUNDAM has a human shape, if it is going to move, that means "walking." However, the biggest drawback to this was that the soles of its feet would have to leave the ground for a long time. Thus, we could not make it walk. Of cource, if sensors that measured the distance to the ground were attached to its feet and it was equipped with a gyroscope to measure overall balance, the generated data could then be collected on a computer. The computer colud then, in turn, adjust motors in each part to archive balance and correct the orientation and incline of the body. However, for a robot size of the GUNDAM, this would be extremely difficult. We thought to ourselves, "if only there were lighter materials and better equipment available." However, presently, this is the extent of the movement we could achieve. Above all, there is no law the will recognize something the height of the GUNDAM as a "vehicle." So it was necessary to construct it according to building regulations, which meant making something that would never fall down, Accordingly, we had to make a GUNDAM that included something like a maintenance tower. I am disappointed that we couldn't make something that could walk on two legs. So, I have a favor to ask of all of you. Among those of you who want to see the GUNDAM move more like a vehicle, look up at this GUNDAM and realize that there are many problems that need to be solved. And then come up with appropriate solutions. This is the extent of the movement we could achive this time; however, everyone involved is very happy that they built it. Why? Though we could only make a humanoid robot of this size move slowly, that slowness suits it very well and makes one feel that this GUNDAM is very kind and gentle. If the truth is told, we wanted to make one that could move fast like the character in the anime, as well as smoothly and stylishly like an athlete. However, those aren't the GUNDAM's only defending features, and it makes me rather happy that I can look up and see this "kind and gentle" GUNDAM. This was something that no one could have fully imagined until we actually made it, but that was a very fun part of the project. I hope you enjoy the finished result. 感想

「建造物」とはいえ、動くガンダムを夜に見るのも良かった。

GUNDAM-DOCK TOWERを見学したものの、GUNDAM-DOCKでは正面からばかり撮っていて、斜めからの写真や動画をもっと多く撮っておいた方が良かったか、と思った。
